Borogu
Variety description
Borogu is the undisputed queen of heady kava and the most prized daytime kava in all of Vanuatu. This exceptional strain from the mystical Pentecost Island embodies the perfect balance between energizing clarity and gentle relaxation—a unique combination that makes it the ideal choice for an active, conscious lifestyle.
The name "Borogu" comes from the local language of Pentecost Island and means "deep rootedness"—a seemingly paradoxical name for a heady strain, but one that perfectly describes this strain's special quality. While other heady strains often have a superficially stimulating effect, Borogu offers a deep, grounding clarity that is both energizing and stabilizing.
With its characteristic chemotype 243156, Borogu offers a unique experience that invigorates both mind and body without causing anxiety or restlessness. This rare quality makes it a preferred choice in Vanuatu's traditional nakamals for daily rituals, important decisions, and social gatherings where both clarity and relaxation are needed.
Borogu's exceptional popularity in Vanuatu speaks for itself: It's the most widely consumed kava variety in the country and is referred to by locals as "the kava that can do it all." This versatility makes it the perfect introduction to the world of heady kava and an essential companion for anyone seeking to enrich their days with natural energy and clarity.

Recipes and variations
Let’s be honest:
Kava doesn't taste particularly delicious—as if you were drinking a piece of earth—dark, tart, and almost clayey, like wet clay after a tropical rain. There's also a slight spiciness reminiscent of fresh pepper and a dull, numbing mouthfeel that makes the taste linger longer. Beyond the initial bitterness, there's a calm, almost creamy depth that's less reminiscent of pleasure than of a ritual—raw, primal, and earthy.
So here are some ways for you to improve the taste.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Nakamal tradition
Borogu originates from Pentecost Island, one of the most culturally rich and traditionally conscious islands in Vanuatu. Here, kava is viewed not just as a beverage, but as a living connection to the ancestors and a tool for wisdom and clarity. The nakamals (traditional kava houses) of Pentecost Island are renowned for their strict adherence to ancient traditions and deep spiritual practice.
Borogu occupies a very special place in the traditional hierarchy of kava varieties. It is called the "chieftain's kava" and is traditionally used in important decision-making, tribal gatherings, and diplomatic negotiations. Borogu's energizing clarity makes it ideal for situations where both wisdom and alertness are required.
Borogu preparation follows a special ritual that differs from other kava varieties. Traditionally, it is prepared in the early morning or late afternoon—never at night, as its energizing properties could disrupt sleep. This awareness of timing demonstrates the locals' deep knowledge of the specific properties of their kava varieties.
The Legend of “Deep Grounding”
An ancient legend from Pentecost Island tells of a wise chief who wished to unite both the energy of the sun and the stability of the earth. He planted the first Borogu plant at sunrise and watered it with water from the island's deepest spring. The plant grew with roots reaching deep into the earth and leaves stretching toward the sun.
This legend is reflected in the unique effect of Borogu:
It combines the energizing power of the sun with the stabilizing power of the earth. Traditionally, Borogu is used in ceremonies that require both inspiration and wisdom—from the election of new chiefs to important community decisions.
Modern adaptation of traditional wisdom
The traditional use of borogu as a daily kava has seamlessly transitioned into the modern world. While the natives of Pentecost Island traditionally used borogu for tribal gatherings and important decision-making, modern practitioners use it for meetings, creative projects, and social gatherings.
The farmers on Pentecost Island still use centuries-old methods of plant care and harvesting. The Borogu plants are nurtured for at least 4-5 years before harvesting, and only the best roots are selected for export. This meticulous production is reflected in the exceptional quality and consistency of our Borogu.
