Borogu

Variety description

Borogu is a calm, sociable Balanced-Heavy variety with pronounced physical relaxation. Depending on preparation, amount and the individual, its physical side can become pronounced. Borogu is particularly suited to the end of the day, relaxed conversations and deliberately winding down.

The name "Borogu" comes from the local language of Pentecost Island and means "deep grounding" - a name that aptly describes this variety's Balanced-Heavy profile. Borogu combines mental calm and social openness with pronounced physical relaxation.

With the frequently cited reference chemotype 423561 and the reported variants 423156 or 246513, Borogu offers an experience that combines mental calm and social openness with pronounced physical relaxation. This combination makes it a suitable choice for relaxed conversations, after-work rituals and situations that call for consciously winding down.

Borogu's exceptional popularity in Vanuatu speaks for itself: it is the country's most widely consumed Kava variety and is described by locals as "the Kava that can do everything". This versatility makes it a typical Balanced-Heavy variety for calm sociability and physical relaxation.

Noble Kava

Borogu

One of the most traditional Kava varieties, prized in Vanuatu for generations. Deeply rooted in island culture, this noble variety accompanies rituals of reconnection. Borogu is a calm, sociable Balanced-Heavy variety with pronounced physical relaxation. Depending on preparation, amount and the individual, its physical side can become pronounced. Borogu is particularly suited to the end of the day, relaxed conversations and deliberately winding down.

Traditional

preparation

  • 15-25g Borogu

  • 300-400ml cold water

  • Kava-Mode Bag

  • Large bowl – coconut shell or glass

  1. Put Borogu in the bag

  2. Close the bag

  3. Place the bag in the bowl of cold water

  4. Knead the bag vigorously for 10-15 minutes

  5. Squeeze the liquid out of the bag

  6. Done! Serve the first portion.

You can repeat the process a second time with another 300 ml.

The finished kava should have a milky-brown color and an earthy, slightly bitter, and slightly spicy taste. A slight tingling and numbness on the tongue indicates the activity of the kavalactones.

Kava flavor

Recipes and variations

Let’s be honest:
Kava doesn't taste particularly delicious—as if you were drinking a piece of earth—dark, tart, and almost clayey, like wet clay after a tropical rain. There's also a slight spiciness reminiscent of fresh pepper and a dull, numbing mouthfeel that makes the taste linger longer. Beyond the initial bitterness, there's a calm, almost creamy depth that's less reminiscent of pleasure than of a ritual—raw, primal, and earthy.

So here are some ways for you to improve the taste.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Nakamal tradition

Borogu comes from Pentecost Island, one of Vanuatu's most culturally rich and tradition-conscious islands. Here, Kava is regarded not merely as a drink, but as a living connection to the ancestors and a tool for wisdom and clarity. The Nakamals (traditional Kava houses) of Pentecost Island are renowned for their strict adherence to ancient traditions and their deep spiritual practice.

Borogu holds a very special place in the traditional hierarchy of Kava varieties. It is known as the "Kava of chiefs" and is traditionally used for important decisions, tribal gatherings and diplomatic negotiations. Borogu's calm sociability and pronounced physical relaxation make it a suitable variety for shared moments that call for presence and consciously winding down.

Borogu is prepared according to a special ritual that differs from that of other Kava varieties. Today, its Balanced-Heavy profile is particularly valued for the end of the day, relaxed conversations and deliberately winding down. Depending on preparation, amount and the individual, its physical side can become pronounced.

The Legend of “Deep Grounding”

An ancient legend from Pentecost Island tells of a wise chief who wanted to unite within himself both the energy of the sun and the stability of the earth. He planted the first Borogu plant at sunrise and watered it with water from the island's deepest spring. The plant grew with roots reaching deep into the earth and leaves stretching towards the sun.

This legend is reflected in Borogu's Balanced-Heavy effect:
It combines mental calm and social openness with pronounced physical relaxation. Traditionally, Borogu stands for grounding and communal presence; today, the variety is particularly suited to the end of the day, relaxed conversations and deliberately winding down.

Modern adaptation of traditional wisdom

Borogu's communal use has carried seamlessly into the modern world. While the people of Pentecost Island traditionally used Borogu for tribal gatherings and important decisions, modern users particularly value its Balanced-Heavy profile for relaxed conversations, end-of-day use and deliberate winding down.

Farmers on Pentecost Island still use centuries-old methods to tend and harvest the plants. Borogu plants are nurtured for at least 4-5 years before harvesting, and only the finest roots are selected for export. This care in production is reflected in the exceptional quality and consistency of our Borogu.
