Palace
Variety description
Palasa is one of the rarest and most spiritually significant kava varieties from Vanuatu, cultivated exclusively for evening ceremonies and deep relaxation. This exceptional heavy strain from the mystical Espiritu Santo Island embodies the essence of Pacific evening rituals—a profound, body-centered relaxation that gently guides body and mind into a state of complete rest.
The name "Palasa" comes from the local language of Espiritu Santo and means "sacred rest"—a term that perfectly describes the special role this kava plays in traditional evening ceremonies. While other heavy varieties often only relax the body, Palasa offers a holistic experience that both releases physical tension and prepares the mind for restful sleep.
With its distinctive chemotype 421635, Palasa offers a unique experience specifically designed for the evening hours. This rare property makes it a preferred choice in Vanuatu's traditional nakamals for sunset rituals, meditation, and preparation for restful sleep.
The exceptional rarity of Palasa—found only in a few gardens on Espiritu Santo—makes it a true treasure for kava connoisseurs. This exclusivity is reflected not only in its limited availability, but also in the special care with which it is cultivated and used for ceremonial purposes. Palasa is more than just a kava variety—it is a portal to the deepest relaxation traditions of the South Pacific.
Nobel Kava
Palace
A tranquil, traditional variety from Vanuatu, created for late evenings and personal rituals. This noble variety has accompanied conscious transitions into rest for centuries. With its gentle, soothing flavor profile, Palasa brings softness to the moment without numbing. A traditional drink for centering, reflection, and a return to inner clarity. In Vanuatu, kava is often consumed as the day draws to a close—in community or silence, as a sign of contemplation. Palasa is this ancient gesture in its purest form.
Traditional
preparation
- 15-25g Palasa
- 300-400ml cold water
- Kava Fashion Bag
- Large bowl – coconut shell or glass
- Put Palasa in the bag
- Close the bag
- Place the bag in the bowl of cold water
- Knead the bag vigorously for 10-15 minutes
- Squeeze the liquid out of the bag
- Done! Serve the first portion.
You can repeat the process a second time with another 300 ml.
The finished kava should have a milky-brown color and an earthy, slightly bitter, and slightly spicy taste. A slight tingling and numbness on the tongue indicates the activity of the kavalactones.

Recipes and variations
Let’s be honest:
Kava doesn't taste particularly delicious—as if you were drinking a piece of earth—dark, tart, and almost clayey, like wet clay after a tropical rain. There's also a slight spiciness reminiscent of fresh pepper and a dull, numbing mouthfeel that makes the taste linger longer. Beyond the initial bitterness, there's a calm, almost creamy depth that's less reminiscent of pleasure than of a ritual—raw, primal, and earthy.
So here are some ways for you to improve the taste.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The evening ceremonies of Espiritu Santo
Palasa originates from Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu's largest and most spiritually significant island, where it is cultivated exclusively for sacred evening ceremonies. Here, kava is considered not just a beverage, but a sacred sacrament that facilitates the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. The nakamals (traditional kava houses) of Espiritu Santo are famous for their deep, meditative evening rituals, in which palasa plays a central role.
In the traditional hierarchy of kava varieties, Palasa occupies a very special, almost mystical position. It is called the "kava of the ancestors" and is traditionally used only in the most important spiritual ceremonies—rites of passage, healing ceremonies, and the sacred sunset rituals that have been practiced for millennia.
The preparation of Palasa follows a strict ceremonial protocol that differs significantly from other kava varieties. Traditionally, it is only prepared at sunset, when the boundary between day and night, between consciousness and dream, is at its thinnest. This timing and awareness demonstrates the deep spiritual significance that the locals attach to this special variety.
The Legend of the “Holy Rest”
An ancient legend from Espiritu Santo tells of a time when the island's people suffered from chronic restlessness and insomnia caused by the spirits of restless ancestors. A wise shaman received a vision in a dream of a special kava plant whose roots reached deep into the ancestral earth and whose leaves captured the tranquility of the stars.
He planted the first Palasa plant in a sacred spot by moonlight and dedicated it to the spirits of tranquility. The plant grew slowly and developed roots of extraordinary depth and potency. When the first harvest came at sunset,
was prepared and drunk, peace and restful sleep finally returned to the people.
This legend is reflected in the unique effect of Palasa:
It combines physical relaxation with spiritual calm and creates a bridge between the conscious mind and the dream world. Therefore, Palasa is traditionally used in ceremonies intended to promote both healing and spiritual enlightenment.
Modern adaptation of traditional wisdom
The traditional use of palasa as a ceremonial evening kava has seamlessly transitioned into the modern world of wellness. While the locals of Espiritu Santo traditionally used palasa for spiritual ceremonies and healing rituals, modern practitioners utilize it for meditation, yoga nidra, and preparing for restful sleep.
The farmers on Espiritu Santo with whom we work directly still use centuries-old methods of plant care and harvesting. Palasa plants are nurtured for at least 5-7 years—longer than any other variety—before harvesting. This exceptionally long maturation period contributes to the intense potency and deep, complex effects.
The rarity of Palasa in local gardens makes each harvest a special event. Only a few families on Espiritu Santo cultivate this sacred variety, and the plants are passed on only through ceremonial transmission from one generation to the next. We continue this tradition of reverence and respect in our modern marketing.
